Helminthiasis is the most common parasitic infection affecting people of any age. Doctors cannot provide accurate statistics on the number of cases, since many people do not consult a specialist when they notice alarming symptoms, but rather treat it themselves. This approach can lead to serious complications becauseeven broad-spectrum drugs may be ineffective against certain types of helminthic infectionsfor example, filariasis - an infection with filamentous nematodes.
In total, we know more than 400 types of worms that can be parasitic in the human body, and it is only possible to determine exactly which of them caused the disease after a laboratory examination of the feces. It is necessary to consult a doctor (general practitioner, proctologist or infectious disease specialist) if you notice signs of an intestinal worm infection. The difficulty of timely diagnosis lies in the absence of symptoms typical of helminthiasis in almost half of the cases, so it is important to know what signs may be indirect manifestations of helminthiasis. It is recommended that adults have a preventive stool examination and a scraping for enterobiasis at least once a year.
How can you get infected?
Most patients believe that helminthic infection is a "disease of dirty hands". This statement is only half true. Some types of worms, such as cestodes and other flatworms, can actually live in the soil and sand, so in the absence of proper hand hygiene, a personcan be infected with helminthiasis, but this route of transmission is mainly characteristic of children of the younger age group (1-6 years). In adults, the main source of infection is poor-quality food (expired dairy products, poorly processed meat, stale eggs) and tap water.
How does worm infection occur?
You can get infected with worms in open rivers and reservoirs. In rare cases, while swimming, a person can become infected with leeches - representatives of the class of annelids that cause hirudinosis. The pathology is quite serious, since the main food of leeches is blood and its components, which leads to damage to blood vessels, rapidly developing anemia and blood poisoning against the background of systemic poisoning of the body. To avoid this, you should not swim in places that are not equipped with "Swimming" signs. During the summer, soil/water samples are taken at regular intervals in places designated for this purpose, and the risk of infection is much lower in such places.
Other sources of infection in humans may include:
- street and domestic animals (pet trays should only be cleaned with gloves, and the animal itself should be bathed regularly and treated with dewormers twice a year);
- polluted air;
- blood-sucking insects (mosquitoes, ticks);
- dust (including household dust that accumulates on soft toys and upholstered furniture).
Note!Certain types of worms can enter the human body through the skin, so physical contact with a person diagnosed with helminthiasis should be limited as much as possible.
Helminths quickly spread throughout the body.
Acute infection in adults: symptoms and signs
Helminthic infection can be independently diagnosed or suspected only during the acute and subacute course of the disease at home. Depending on the type and number of worms and the state of the immune system, it can range from 1 week to 4 months. The symptoms of the pathology are most pronounced during this period, so the chance of timely treatment and reducing the risk of acute complications is maximum.
The main symptoms of acute helminthiasis are intestinal dysfunction. The patient develops functional intestinal disorders in the form of diarrhea or long-lasting stool deficiency (constipation is 4 times less common than diarrhea syndrome). The consistency of feces infected with worms is thin, watery, sometimes with the addition of foam. The smell is foul and pungent. The color can vary, but in most patients the stool becomes a lighter, pale yellow color. If the worms are heavily infected, the feces may be brown or green in color. They sometimes contain streaks of mucus and blood, which are released as a result of the worms damaging the blood vessels and capillaries in the intestinal lining.
In addition to other symptoms of the gastrointestinal tract, the patient may experience abdominal pain, sudden vomiting for no reason, and loss of appetite against the background of constant nausea. Many patients lose weight during this period: weight loss can reach up to 10% within 2-4 months from the onset of the disease. The skin turns pale and a polymorphic rash appears on it in the form of blisters or nodules filled with secretions. The same rash can occur on the mucous membranes of the genitals, oral cavity and internal organs. About 10-20% develop acne, boils and comedones during this period. Spotted red rashes may appear on the skin of the abdomen and elbows.
Other signs of acute infection in adults include:
- inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye (parasitic conjunctivitis);
- swelling of the face, limbs, and neck (may be accompanied by dropsy of internal organs);
- febrile condition;
- fever and chills against the background of periodic temperature rise to 38°C and above.
Important!Anal itching, which is considered the main symptom of helminthiasis, is mainly characteristic of enterobiasis - fungal infections. This occurs as a result of skin irritation in the anorectal area, which is secreted by female pinworms at night. In the case of other acute forms of helminthic infection, such a clinical picture cannot be considered typical.
Chronic infection: what symptoms should you look out for?
The chronic form of helminthiasis is a very common pathology that develops in the absence of timely treatment in the acute period. Most clinical symptoms ease and lose intensity during this period, but do not disappear completely. A person may periodically experience mild abdominal pain, nausea, and possible vomiting immediately after a meal or 1-2 hours after a meal. The rash usually persists. If the reaction is severe, the patient may experienceAngioedema is a fatal condition accompanied by laryngeal and bronchospasm.
One of the main symptoms (and complications) of chronic helminthic infection is anemia. It manifests as unnatural pallor, weakness (chronic fatigue syndrome) and weakness. A person's performance decreases, he becomes lethargic, emotional lability is observed.
If the hepatobiliary system is affected
The hepatobiliary system, which includes the liver, gallbladder, and bile ducts, is a major target for parasite attack. Worms can feed on liver parenchyma cells, blood, bile and bile acids. This form of pathology manifests itself in severe pain, localized under the right rib in the upper abdomen. The pain can be stabbing, cutting or dagger-like, so many people mistake it for an attack of biliary colic (this situation is especially common in people with chronic gall bladder and kidney diseases).
Obstructive jaundice is another symptom that requires immediate diagnosis. Yellowing of the skin and sclera of the eyes is a manifestation of dangerous liver diseases (hepatitis, cirrhosis) or symptoms of organ tissue damage caused by parasites.
Important!Hepatobiliary helminthiasis is one of the most serious types of pathology. In the absence of adequate and timely therapy, the patient may die from acute poisoning and necrosis of the liver tissue.
Clinical indicators - signs of helminthic infection
A doctor may suspect a parasitic infection if the results of three blood tests confirm that the patient is suffering from anemia - a low level of hemoglobin. In adults, the hemoglobin norm is 120-140 g/l. In some cases, for example during pregnancy, this number can be slightly lower - up to 110 g/l. But the amount of hemoglobin cannot fall below these values. Anemia in patients with helminthiasis develops rapidly, since almost 90% of parasites feed on human blood and damage small blood vessels.
Another permanent clinical sign of long-term helminthiasis iseosinophilia - an absolute or relative increase in the level of eosinophils in the blood. This is a type of granulocytic leukocyte mass, which is the main indicator of the body's allergic readiness. If it is infected with parasites, it is always accompanied by skin itching and a polymorphic rash.
How can you protect yourself against worm infestation?
The basic rule that helps to protect the body from the penetration of worms is the strict observance of hygiene - above all, hand hygiene. For washing, it is better to use soap with antibacterial components or natural laundry soap with at least 72% fatty acid content. The laundry soap has a pronounced antiseptic and antimicrobial effect and is excellent at preventing infectious diseases. If you cannot tolerate the smell of laundry soap, you can use a product with aromatic additives.
Food must be prepared in accordance with hygiene and heat treatment regulations. We recommend that you rinse vegetables and fruits with boiling water or wash them with soap and roast or cook meat at a high temperature for at least 30-40 minutes. The minimum time to cook an egg is 20 minutes. It is important to monitor the quality and freshness of the products and carefully check the expiration dates. If the product does not have the necessary information and label, it is better to refuse to buy it.
If there are pets in the house, a deworming course must be carried out 2 times a year, even if the animal does not go outside, as worm eggs can be brought into the apartment on shoes and clothes. The safest dewormer for cats and dogs is chicken-flavored tablets.
What should be taken in case of helminthiasis?
The treatment of helminthiasis can only be prescribed by a doctor, since all anthelmintic drugs are very toxic and negatively affect the state of the liver. The table lists frequently prescribed drugs with a broad spectrum of effects and their dosage, but these can only be used after laboratory diagnosis and specialist consultation.
Signs, treatment and symptoms of worms in the intestine in adults
About 250 types of worms live in the body of an adult person, which are caused by parasitic worms that enter the human body and cause various diseases.
The presence of helminths in the intestines of people is covered under the guise of other diseases.
A person can be treated with a disease for years without realizing that they have worms in their body. And only after the treatment of helminths, you will feel much better.
Classification of helminths
Parasites are divided into 3 groups:
- roundworms;
- flatworms;
- they are unfortunate.
Groups of worms are also distinguished according to biological characteristics:
- Biohelminths- tapeworm, pig and cattle. As they grow up, they change their host, starting with insects and finally migrating to humans.
- Geohelminths— roundworms, whipworms and many other parasites immediately penetrate the body of an adult and begin their development at an early stage.
- Contact- pinworms, dwarf tapeworm. The penetration is from an infected person.
Where can helminths live?
Parasites primarily infect the intestines of adults. But not everyone knows that there are types that can live in other organs:
- Tapeworms, nematodes and whipwormsthey live in the large intestine.
- Thermatodes- get into the liver and gall bladder.
- Pig tapewormlives in any organ of an adult.
Types of microorganisms living in the adult body
The bodies of adults are predominantly worms such as roundworms, roundworms and tapeworms. They actively absorb nutrients from an adult's body, after which metabolic disorders, anemia, severe weight loss and other diseases occur.
Helminths in humans:
- Roundworms:infection occurs after eating unwashed vegetables and fruits.
- Wide band:When eating raw fish.
- Pinworms:by contact with people already infected with the parasite and by sharing utensils and bedding.
Helminths develop over a certain period of time, which usually lasts from 15 to 60 days, after which the chronic stage of the disease occurs.
After the transition to the chronic stage, a person's immunity decreases. Inflammation begins immediately against the background of weakening of the body.
Causes of worms
Helminths cause serious poisoning in the human body. If worms appear in an adult, the symptoms depend on the type of parasite, its habitat and the number of parasites, which multiply several times a day, even thousands of times.
How long does it take for the first signs to appear?
For example, in the case of roundworms, two to three days are enough to detect a bad condition. Most often, infection with other types of parasites occurs in adults, the first signs appear after 2-3 weeks, but the first symptoms of filariasis can be expected at the age of 6-18 months.
The danger is that in some cases the disease associated with worms occurs without visible symptoms. Signs may appear when the parasite reaches a huge size.
- Pinworms— The main symptoms of these parasites in the body of adults are itching, which increases at night. The frequency may last for a day or two and then not bother you for several weeks. And if the infection is severe, itching can often occur.
- Trichocephalosis— a sign of infection with this type of helminth is the development of anemia. Nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea and severe weight loss may occur.
- Roundworms- a rash appears on the whole body, but it can also be on different parts of the body, nausea, abdominal pain, weight loss. If this parasite is not noticed in time, the integrity of the intestine can be damaged. If a roundworm enters the appendix, severe inflammation can develop in this organ.
If the number of helminths has increased several times, a high temperature may appear. But in rare cases, the parasite infection is asymptomatic. But basically, helminth infection presents itself with signs that are not difficult to notice.
At the initial stage of occurrence of worms, the appropriate comprehensive treatment should be started so that this disease does not become chronic.
How parasites enter the human body. Infection
There are four ways of infection by parasites.
- Through land and water with eggworms. During communication with animals, as well as when eating food and products on which a fly with helminth eggs has landed. Wash your hands thoroughly every time you touch the ground. Vegetables and fruits collected from the site must be washed with water using a special scraper or sponge. You should not drink spring water, as parasite eggs mostly live in water. Do not swallow water when swimming in lakes, rivers or other bodies of water.
- A person suffering from parasites such as roundworms. Reproduction takes place at night. The female individual crawls out of the intestines and lays one or more eggs in the folds of the anal passage, after which, of course, itching occurs, the person scratches, and worm eggs remain on underwear, hands and surrounding objects. Without proper hand washing, infection occurs by putting fungal eggs in the mouth. This is the most common way of infection by parasites.
- When eating undercooked and raw meat, as well as raw fish.
- On mosquito bites, flies and so on.
When helminths enter the body, two stages of development can occur: acute and chronic.
The acute stage begins from the moment the helminths enter the human body and can last from two weeks to 2 months.
The second stage begins after a person does not get rid of worms and lasts throughout life. When worms enter the body, poor absorption of nutrients occurs.

Tests for the detection of parasites in adults
To diagnose the presence of worms in the body of an adult, a stool sample is collected for research. For certain types of helminths, additional tests are collected:
- scrapings from the anal canal are collected for the presence of egg worms in adults;
- in women, scrapings are collected from the vagina, umbilical region, and inguinal folds;
- perform an immunological test;
- urine and blood tests are taken.
If there are individuals of the intestinal worm in the body, then the symptoms appear unnoticed by an adult. If there are a large number of parasites in the body, then the symptoms appear in a rather complex way. Especially with a certain type of worms, people suffer in the evening and at night.
In order to remove parasites from the human body, the doctor prescribes an individual treatment.
Treatment of helminthic infections
In the modern world, there are many preventive measures and treatment methods that have their own specialization for the treatment of different types of parasites.
There are about 70 types of helminths in Hungary. Exact treatment and drugs are prescribed only after the examination of the tests, because the drugs are highly toxic. In addition, appropriate treatment is prescribed for all kinds of parasites.
Treatment may be repeated as there is a risk of re-infection.

The treatment can also be carried out using traditional methods. Well-proven methods are considered effective. This includes eating pumpkin seeds and the tansy plant.
In the modern world, it is believed that pumpkin seeds are best consumed in the morning on an empty stomach. You have to eat 300 grams of seeds in one hour. It is advisable to grind it and add honey. Do not eat anything for four hours and clean your stomach with laxatives and enemas.
A repeat treatment is recommended after two weeks. Carrots or carrot juice are also believed to help against parasites. Herbal decoction of wormwood helps to get rid of the problem, it should be taken orally or as an enema.
Prevention of worms. What is it for?
You should lead a healthy lifestyle, drink purified or boiled water, use personal hygiene items and your own utensils, bed linen and other personal items.
All animal vaccinations must be completed on time. Vegetables and fruits must be thoroughly washed before consumption, and meat and fish must be heated. Take antiparasitic medication for prevention. Do not eat raw, dried or dried freshwater fish. To avoid infection with helminths, you just need to follow the rules of prevention.
